Teaching Mathematics
The mastery pedagogy underpins teaching and learning in mathematics. The whole class works through the programme of study with a focus on depth rather than acceleration. Ideas are revisited at higher levels as the curriculum spirals through the years. Our mathematics curriculum adopts an inclusive approach, emphasising ‘achievement for all’. Classes are arranged in mixed ability pairs and are rotated regularly to build self-confidence and resilience in children. Those pupils who grasp concepts quickly are challenged to apply their learning across a range of contexts within a topic. Children who are not sufficiently fluent are provided additional support to consolidate their understanding before moving on. Provision within the lesson is referenced in short term planning to support the needs of individual children to ensure every child can ‘fly high’.
